While looking over your printing options, you may have seen the phrase “Print-On-Demand” used. But what does that mean, exactly? And why have we named our company, POD Print, after this practice?
The dictionary definition of print-on-demand is essentially the following:
A process in which printed items are not produced until the printing company receives an order for them.
This process is in opposition to a past common practice of printing items in bulk, storing them until they were needed, and then shipping them when ordered. Because of the time required for offset printing (creating, loading, and coloring printing plates), creating small print runs was simply cost-prohibitive. So printed pieces were printed in bulk and kept in inventory, often requiring pricey storage space and resulting in a lot of waste when items updated while there was unused inventory.
The increasing prevalence of digital printing technology allows for smaller print runs at a reasonable cost and fast turnaround time. This means customers can order as many or as few pieces as they want, can do so at a comparable cost, and still receive their product quickly. This on-demand process can even be entirely automated to further decrease production costs, but doing so can result in a lower quality. This has sometimes painted printing on demand in a negative light.
