First off, we’ll need to go over some terminology. The “cut” of a tab describes the number of tabs from top to bottom. So if there are three long tabs, it’s “third cut”. If there are a dozen small tabs, that’s “twelfth cut”. A “bank” of tabs is one set from the top to bottom of the page, and a book can have multiple banks of tabs.

Another term we’ll discuss is “mylar”. This is a thin sheet of transparent, colorful plastic that’s adhered to the tab and can help distinguish sections of your book. Mylar is available in a wide variety of colors to work with any project.
In some custom projects, a luxury option is poly tabs. These are printed on a sturdy polyester version of cardstock that is tear-resistant and can withstand heavier use.
If you’re setting up a document with tabs, remember to keep the design simple, limit the amount of text used (usually up to three short words, or one long word), and choose an easy-to-read typeface. The quicker and more easily your users can read the tab, the better.
