“Donut” miss our first part of this blog series about the first steps in the journey of Johnna Kolar’s book A Donut a Day. In that article, we discuss how Johnna found POD Print and the initial steps of preparation.
In this post, we’ll show how a file becomes a book!
First, prepress creates a print-ready file and sends it out to our digital press department, who prints the book with multiples on a sheet.
Next up, the covers get laminated to make them more durable and give them the perfect glossy sheen. For more on lamination, check out our blog post on lamination and coating.
After lamination, the books are trimmed to size using a large-scale cutting machine that can slice through hundreds of pages at once with precision.
Then it’s on to binding! For some books, this involves gluing on a paperback cover or a hardcover. Smaller booklets can also be bound using a saddle-stitch, which is a fold with a staple in the center. For this book, Johnna chose a coil bind. A small machine punches the holes in a section of pages at a time, then a spinning roller helps slip the coil on quickly. The ends of the coil are folded under by hand using a special tool that looks a little bit like a set of pliers.
