What are my Book Binding Options

With book printing, multiple binding styles are available to you. Gone are the days of limited options.

In this post, we’ll discuss the five most common options for binding:

  • Saddle Stitch
  • Spiral (Coil)
  • Wire (Wire-O)
  • Perfect Bind
  • Case Bind

Saddle Stitch

This binding style is common for short-term handouts, newsletters, and brochures. In a saddle-stitched book, the sheets are folded in half, with two staples holding them together. It is a simple, cost-effective binding method for smaller books (up to approximately 64 pages, including the cover).

Spiral or Coil Binding

Spiral binding (sometimes referred to as ‘coil binding’) involves punching a series of holes through the book and winding a plastic coil through the holes. This is a great cost-saving option for books too large to saddle stitch or for books that need a more finished look. Your covers can be laminated with a selection of finishes, printed on heavyweight stock, or we can attach a clear plastic sheet over your printed cover. Coils are available in multiple colors.

Wire Binding

Wire-O, or Wire-Binding, is similar to spiral binding but uses two-pronged metal wire instead of plastic. This is a more professional-looking alternative to spiral binding and includes the same cover options. Wires are also available in multiple colors.

Perfect Binding

You may not be familiar with the term perfect binding, but you’ve undoubtedly held a perfect-bound book in your hands. Paperback books are perfect-bound, with the pages securely glued into a heavy cardstock cover. Your book’s cover can be laminated or coated with various finishes, and we offer a selection of paper stocks for your book’s interior. POD Print is happy to accommodate many non-standard book dimensions as well as the most common sizes.

Case Binding

Case binding is more commonly known as “hardcover” binding. This involves wrapping a coated or laminated cover stock around a sturdy cardboard base, then binding the pages into it for a truly durable book. Try coating the cover with a special finish to give it a truly luxurious feel.

If you’re still not sure which style is best for your project and budget, we’re happy to help you select the most effective option for you. Please call us at 316.522.5599 or email us at info@podprint.com and we’d love to answer any further questions you might have.
