“Donut” forget to catch up on the first two parts of this blog series! In the first post, we discuss the early stages of Johnna Kolar’s A Donut a Day, and check out the second post for the production journey of the book.

In this article, we’ll follow Johnna’s book after printing.

Once the books were spiral-bound and complete, they were ready for pick-up! We were elated to see Johnna’s smiling face when she received her books leading up to book-signing events. Over 100 attendees bought a signed book during an event at Moxi Junction on December 3^rd!

With even more upcoming signings and Meet the Author events at local schools, the future of A Donut A Day is bright!

We asked Johnna if she’d be happy to answer an interview with us, and here’s what she said:

For those unfamiliar with the book, what is A Donut a Day?

It is a 366 page book of daily donut quotes inspiring people to live a sweet life by using kindness.

How did this book come to be?

I am a substitute teacher in Maize, Kansas, and while I was teaching a middle school class last Spring, I read some of the social contracts hung around the classroom. As I read words like “respect, honest, kind, hard-working,” and more, I came up with the idea to incorporate those words into donut phrases for my book.

Tell us a little about yourself. What do you like to do outside of work or sampling donuts?

I love traveling, playing pickleball, trying new places to eat, garage sailing, going to concerts, and spending time with my family and friends.

What has been your favorite donut out of all the ones you’ve tried?

I have two. I tried 389 flavors of donuts from The Donut Whole in Wichita, and they made a donut called “The Johnna” for my birthday years ago. This was flavor number 209 I had tried from them, and it is a buttermilk donut with banana icing, double dipped in peanut butter icing, and topped with edible gold glitter. Since it isn’t always on their daily menu, I have called ahead to place a special order.

My other favorite is a white fluff filled maple long john from Sugar Shak in Wichita. The long john is dipped in glazed icing, topped with maple icing, and pumped with a white fluff filling. Since this store is open until 11:00 a.m., In the summer, I will often get one on my way to play pickleball, and enjoy it after my game.

What has been your favorite part of creating this book?

Putting positive quotes onto pages using my favorite food…donuts! I hope that it will help remind people to live a life filled with kindness. If everyone would live life following these quotes, what a wonderful world it would be!
